Why Outboard Motors Matter for Inflatables
An outboard motor transforms an inflatable boat from a paddle-powered craft into a versatile water vehicle capable of covering significant distances, carrying heavy loads, and operating in current and wind. The right motor match — correct horsepower, shaft length, and mounting system — is essential for safety, performance, and longevity of both the motor and the boat. Undersized motors struggle against current; oversized motors overwhelm the transom and create a handling hazard.
Choosing the Right Horsepower
2-3 HP (Displacement)
Best for 2.0-2.7m dinghies used as yacht tenders or for short-distance lake cruising. Provides 5-7 knots (6-8 mph) at displacement speed. Extremely lightweight (27-40 lbs), easy to mount and remove. Fuel-efficient — runs 2-3 hours on a single tank. Ideal for calm protected waters.
5-8 HP (Semi-Planing)
Best for 2.7-3.3m dinghies used for fishing, family outings, or medium-distance travel. Provides 10-15 knots (12-17 mph) — enough for semi-planing operation. Weighs 55-80 lbs. Good balance of power and portability. Can push against moderate current and wind.
10-15 HP (Planing)
Best for 3.3-3.8m+ dinghies with rigid transoms. Provides 18-25 knots (20-29 mph) for full planing operation. Weighs 80-110 lbs. Requires a rigid or reinforced transom. Ideal for watersports, long-distance travel, and carrying heavy loads. Not recommended for fully inflatable transoms.

Electric Outboard Motors for Inflatables
Electric outboards are increasingly popular for inflatable dinghies, especially in the 2-5 HP equivalent range. They offer instant torque, near-silent operation, zero emissions, and minimal maintenance. A 55 lb thrust electric motor (roughly equivalent to 2.5 HP gas) on a 2.7m dinghy provides 4-5 knots for 2-4 hours on a single 100Ah lithium battery charge. Electric motors are ideal for fishing (silent approach), yacht tendering (no fuel smell), and lakes with combustion engine restrictions. The primary limitation is range — recharging requires shore power or a generator.

Pre-Operation Checklist
- Verify the motor is securely clamped and safety chains are attached
- Check fuel lines for leaks and fuel level (gas models)
- Confirm battery charge (electric models)
- Attach engine kill switch lanyard to your PFD

Operating Guidelines
- Never exceed the boat's maximum HP rating — it's a safety limit, not a suggestion
- Trim the motor to avoid cavitation — the propeller should be fully submerged
- Reduce speed in turns — inflatable boats are less stable at speed than hard hulls
- Watch for propeller strike — never operate motor near swimmers
