What Are Marine Distress Signals?

Marine distress signals are standardized visual, audible, or electronic devices designed to alert others that a vessel or person is in grave and imminent danger and requires immediate assistance. These signals are governed by international regulations (SOLAS, COLREGS) and national standards (USCG, CE). The choice of signaling equipment depends on the type of watercraft, operating distance from shore, and whether the voyage is coastal, offshore, or inland. Modern distress communication combines traditional pyrotechnic signals with satellite-based electronic beacons and VHF radio.

Distress Signal Categories

Pyrotechnic Flares (SOLAS/ISO 20909)

Red hand flares (500 cd, 60 sec burn), red parachute flares (30,000 cd, 40 sec at 300 m altitude), and orange smoke signals (50 sec). Visible for 5-20 nautical miles depending on type and weather. Mandatory on many commercial vessels. Shelf life: 3-4 years from manufacture.

Electronic Beacons (EPIRB/PLB)

406 MHz satellite beacons transmit a unique digital code to the COSPAS-SARSAT satellite network, relayed to local search and rescue authorities. EPIRBs are vessel-mounted and self-activating. PLBs are personal, manually activated. GPS-enabled models provide position accuracy within 100 m. Battery life: 5-10 years.

VHF Marine Radio (ITU-R M.493)

Channel 16 (156.8 MHz) is the international distress, safety, and calling frequency. Digital Selective Calling (DSC) enables one-button distress transmission with position data. Range: 5-30 nautical miles depending on antenna height. Essential for coastal and inland waters.

Visual / Audible Signals

International distress signals include: continuous sounding of fog horn or whistle, raising and lowering arms slowly, square flag with ball above/below (N/C), SOS in light or sound (3 short, 3 long, 3 short), and dye markers (fluorescein, visible from air for 3-6 hours).

How Emergency Beacons Work

406 MHz EPIRBs and PLBs operate on the COSPAS-SARSAT satellite constellation, a joint international search and rescue system. When activated, the beacon transmits a 0.5-second burst every 50 seconds containing a unique 15-digit hexadecimal code (UIN — Unique Identification Number) that identifies the vessel or owner. The code is registered in a national database with emergency contact information. LEOSAR (Low Earth Orbit) satellites detect the signal using Doppler shift to calculate position within 5 km, while GEOSAR (Geostationary) satellites provide near-instantaneous alerting but lower position accuracy. GPS-enabled beacons encode position data directly into the transmission, providing 100 m accuracy at the first satellite pass. The complete detection-to-alert cycle typically takes 5-30 minutes for 406 MHz beacons.

Protocol

VHF Radio Distress Procedure

Step 1: Tune to Channel 16. Press DSC distress button (if equipped). The radio automatically transmits your MMSI number and GPS position.
Step 2: Say "MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY" clearly. Repeat the vessel name three times. State "MAYDAY [vessel name]" three times.
Step 3: Provide position (GPS coordinates or bearing/distance from known landmark), nature of distress, type of assistance needed, number of persons on board, and vessel description. Say "OVER" when finished.
Step 4: Repeat the call on Channel 16 every 5 minutes until acknowledged. If no response, switch to another channel and try. Keep transmitting even if no immediate reply — signals can be repeated.
