Deep-V Hull Design: Performance, Stability, and Applications
What Is a Deep-V Hull?
A deep-V hull is a boat hull design characterized by a sharp V-shaped entry at the bow that continues aft with a significant deadrise angle — typically 20 degrees or more at the transom. The V-shape cuts through waves rather than slapping against them, providing a smooth, comfortable ride at high speeds in choppy conditions. Deep-V hulls are standard on rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) used for patrol, rescue, and high-speed operations where rough-water performance is critical. The trade-off is reduced initial stability at rest compared to flat-bottom or shallow-V hulls.
Deadrise Angle and Performance
Shallow V (10-15°)
Flat bottom near the transom. Maximum initial stability — the boat feels solid at rest and at low speeds. Best for calm-water operation. Harder ride in chop — slamming is noticeable in waves over 1-2 ft. Common on recreational fishing boats and small utility dinghies. Less fuel-efficient at planing speed due to increased wetted surface.
Moderate V (15-20°)
Good balance of stability and rough-water performance. Acceptable ride quality in 2-3 ft seas. Moderate initial stability — noticeable roll at rest but manageable. Common on multi-purpose RIBs and trailerable cabin boats. The most popular deadrise range for recreational powerboats.
Deep V (20-25°+)
Maximum wave-cutting ability. Excellent ride quality at high speed in rough conditions — minimal slamming in 3-5 ft seas. Reduced stability at rest — the boat rocks side-to-side (chines roll). Requires active trim tabs for optimum planing attitude. Standard for ocean-going patrol, rescue, and military RIBs.

Search and Rescue
SAR operations demand boats that can reach incident sites quickly in any weather. Deep-V RIBs maintain 25+ knot speeds in 3-4 ft seas, reducing response time. The inflatable tubes provide stability during alongside recovery operations and absorb impact when coming alongside vessels or structures.
Law Enforcement Patrol
Police and coast guard units need all-weather capability. Deep-V hulls allow patrol RIBs to operate in conditions that keep smaller boats at dock. The stable platform supports boarding operations, and the inflatable tubes protect the hull when coming alongside other vessels.
Offshore Support
Offshore wind farm support, oil platform crew transfer, and marine survey operations require boats that can transit open water and then work alongside large structures. Deep-V hulls provide the open-water capability while inflatable tubes protect against impacts with steel structures.
High-Speed Diving Support
Dive support boats need to reach dive sites quickly and then provide a stable platform for gear-up and entry. Deep-V hulls with tube stabilization balance these competing requirements. The large tube volume provides secondary stability at rest that compensates for the V-hull's initial tenderness.
