What to Look for in a PFD
Choosing a personal flotation device requires matching three variables: the water environment (sheltered, coastal, offshore), the activity (paddling, boating, fishing, rescue), and the wearer's body type and swimming ability. The correct PFD must provide sufficient buoyancy, fit securely without restricting movement, and carry the appropriate certification for your region.
How Buoyancy Works
Personal flotation devices operate on Archimedes' principle — the buoyant force equals the weight of the water displaced by the submerged portion of the device. A PFD must provide sufficient buoyancy to keep an unconscious person's airway clear of the water, typically requiring 7–12 kg (15.4–26.5 lbs) of buoyancy for adults depending on the regulatory standard. The engineering challenge is packaging this buoyancy into a comfortable, low-profile garment that does not impede swimming or movement. Foam and Fabric Construction

Inflatable PFDs replace foam with a CO₂ cartridge and a polyurethane-coated nylon bladder that inflates automatically on water immersion.

Fit Testing Checklist
A properly fitted life vest should: fit snugly without being restrictive, not ride up above the ears when lifted by the shoulders, allow full range of arm motion for paddling, have all straps and buckles secured and adjusted, and be the correct size for the wearer's chest measurement.
