What Is Maritime Search and Rescue?

Maritime search and rescue (SAR) is the coordinated effort to locate and assist persons in distress or imminent danger on the water. SAR operations range from near-shore responses to swimmers and capsized small craft to offshore missions involving disabled vessels, aircraft downed at sea, and mass casualty incidents. Rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) are the vessel of choice for the majority of maritime SAR operations because they combine the rough-water performance needed to reach incident sites quickly with the stability at rest needed to recover casualties from the water. The inflatable tube system provides secondary stability during alongside operations, acts as a fender when working near structures, and absorbs impact forces during wave impacts — all critical advantages over rigid-hull vessels in rescue scenarios.

Hull and Performance

Deep-V hull with 20-24 degree deadrise for rough-water transit at 25+ knots in 3-4 ft seas. Progressive entry angle for wave piercing. Self-bailing cockpit with non-skid deck. High freeboard to keep crew dry and safe. Trim tabs for optimal planing attitude in varying sea states. Twin-engine configuration for redundancy in offshore operations.

Tube System

Hypalon fabric for maximum durability and UV resistance. Large diameter tubes (50-70 cm) for high secondary stability during casualty recovery. Minimum 5 independent air chambers for damage redundancy. Heavy-duty rubbing strakes for alongside operations. Integrated towing points and lifting eyes. High-pressure inflation (3-4 PSI) for optimal rigidity at speed.

Deck and Layout

Clear deck space for casualty handling — minimum 4-6 m² for stretcher operations. Low-freeboard transom area for water recovery. Dedicated first aid station with equipment stowage. Crew seating with shock-mitigating suspension for high-speed transit. Lockable equipment lockers for rescue gear, communications, and medical supplies.

Essential SAR Equipment

Navigation and Communication: GPS/chartplotter with SAR pattern overlay, radar with MARPA target tracking, VHF/DSC radio (fixed and handheld), AIS transceiver, satellite phone for offshore operations. All electronics should be waterproof and shock-mounted.
Detection and Search: Thermal imaging camera for night and low-visibility search, high-intensity searchlight (>10 million candela), night vision compatible lighting, radar reflector, emergency position indicating radio beacon (EPIRB), flare kit (parachute and hand flares), and smoke floats.
Casualty Recovery: Davit or A-frame lift system for hoisting casualties from water, rescue net or basket, scoop stretcher and spine board, throw bags with floating rope (3-4 per boat), boat hooks, and swim platform or ladder for self-recovery.
Medical and Survival: Marine first aid kit (extended), oxygen therapy system, AED, hypothermia treatment kit (thermal blankets, chemical heat packs), casualty bags, and water rescue personal protective equipment for crew including dry suits and helmets.
Boat Systems: Bilge pumps (electric and manual), fire extinguisher system, towing gear with towline and bridle, anchor with chain/rodes, backup battery and charging system, and deck floodlighting for night operations.
Techniques

Rescue Techniques and Approaches

Alongside Recovery

The most common technique for recovering a casualty from the water. The coxswain approaches from downwind/down-current, stopping the boat alongside the casualty with the tubes providing a soft contact point. Crew members reach over the tube to grasp the casualty's life vest or clothing and lift them aboard. The inflatable tube's buoyancy provides a stable platform for the recovery crew. Ideal when the casualty is conscious and can assist.

Stern Recovery

Used when recovering unconscious or heavy casualties. The boat approaches bow-to-wind and reverses toward the casualty. Crew in the stern reaches or uses a rescue net/basket to bring the casualty aboard over the transom. The low transom height on RIBs (typically 50-60 cm above water) makes stern recovery easier than on deep-V motorboats. An outboard tilt mechanism may be needed to clear the recovery zone.

Mass Casualty Towing

When multiple casualties are in the water (capsized ferry, aircraft ditching), the RIB acts as a collection point. Casualties are secured to the side of the tubes using snap hooks or rescue lines — the inflatable tubes can support multiple people hanging from grab lines. The boat then transports casualties to a larger vessel or shore. This technique maximizes the RIB's capacity in mass casualty events.

Towing Disabled Vessels

RIBs frequently tow disabled small craft to safety. The SAR RIB approaches the disabled vessel from downwind, passes a towline, and tows at displacement speed (5-8 knots). The RIB's deep-V hull provides directional stability while towing, and the inflatable tubes absorb contact forces during line handling. Towing capacity depends on RIB size — a 6m RIB can typically tow vessels up to 8-10m in moderate conditions.

Crew Training

SAR Crew Training and Certification

Boat Handling: All SAR crew must demonstrate proficiency in RIB handling at speed, low-speed maneuvering in confined spaces, station-keeping in current and wind, and emergency maneuvers including crash stops and quick turns. Training should include night operations and reduced visibility scenarios.
Rescue Techniques: Crews train in alongside recovery, stern recovery, net/basket recovery, unconscious casualty handling, mass casualty management, towing operations, and helicopter hoist transfer. Live rescue drills in controlled conditions are essential for skill development.
Medical Training: Minimum first aid certification with additional training in marine-specific topics: cold water immersion and hypothermia treatment, near-drowning response, spinal injury management in the marine environment, and evacuation procedures.
Certification Standards: IMO Model Course 1.24 (Search and Rescue), STCW basic safety training for commercial SAR operations, national SAR standards (SMC, OSC), and incident command system (ICS) for multi-agency coordination.
