The term "drop stitch" refers to a knitting technique where threads are alternately dropped from one needle and picked up by another. In inflatable watercraft, this creates a dense grid of connecting threads between two layers of fabric.

When air is pumped into the sealed structure, the pressure tries to push the top and bottom layers apart. The drop-stitch threads resist this force, keeping the layers at a fixed distance. The result is a rigid, flat surface that behaves like a solid board.
