What Is an Inflatable Dinghy?

An inflatable dinghy is a lightweight, portable boat that uses air-filled tubes for buoyancy and stability. Unlike rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) which have a solid fiberglass hull, dinghies are fully inflatable — the floor, tubes, and sometimes the transom all deflate for compact storage. Dinghies serve three primary roles: yacht tender (transporting crew between boat and shore), utility craft (fishing, diving support, short-distance transport), and recreational boat (family outings on lakes and protected waters). Their portability, stable soft-sided design, and affordability make them the most popular category of small inflatable watercraft worldwide.

Dinghy Types by Floor Construction

Air Deck Floor

An inflatable floor system that uses high-pressure air chambers to create a rigid, cushioned deck. Air deck floors are fully collapsible, lightweight, and provide excellent comfort. They require inflation to 10-15 PSI for optimal rigidity. Ideal for recreational use and family outings where comfort matters.

Slatted (Roll-Up) Floor

Interlocking aluminum or marine plywood slats that create a rigid floor. Slatted floors are stiffer than air decks and can support higher loads, but take longer to assemble and are heavier. Common on larger dinghies used for fishing or as yacht tenders where maximum rigidity is needed.

Rigid Hull (RIB)

A fiberglass or aluminum hull with inflatable tubes. RIBs offer the best performance — planing capability, rough-water handling, and higher load capacity — but are not fully collapsible. They require trailer or roof-rack transport. Best for professional or high-performance use.

How to Choose the Right Size and Material

Length: 2.0-2.7m (6.5-9 ft) for 1-2 people as yacht tender. 3.0-3.6m (10-12 ft) for 3-5 people and motorized use. 3.8m+ for multi-person fishing or family outings with gear.
Material: Marine-grade PVC (1,000-1,200 denier) for recreational use — UV resistant, abrasion resistant, and affordable. Hypalon for professional and commercial use — superior UV and chemical resistance with 15-20 year lifespan.
Air Chambers: Minimum 3 separate chambers (port, starboard, floor) for safety. More chambers = better redundancy if one chamber is punctured. Each chamber should hold pressure independently.
Transom: Inflatable transoms fold flat for storage and support motors up to 3-6 HP. Rigid transoms (aluminum or plywood) support 10-15 HP but are heavier and partially disassemble.
Weight Capacity: Check the manufacturer's rated capacity. A 2.7m dinghy typically carries 350-500 lbs. A 3.6m dinghy carries 600-900 lbs. Never exceed 80% of rated capacity for safe operation.

Yacht Tender

The most traditional use — transporting crew and supplies between a moored yacht and shore. A good tender is lightweight (under 50 lbs), inflates in under 5 minutes, and packs into a carry bag. 2.3-2.7m is the sweet spot. A small 2-3 HP outboard or electric motor provides dock-to-ship transport.

Fishing Platform

Inflatable dinghies offer a stable, silent fishing platform for lakes and inshore waters. The soft-sided design absorbs waves and provides a stable casting deck. Air deck floors reduce noise from movement. Add rod holders, an anchor system, and 3-5 HP outboard for trolling.

Family Recreation

A 3.0-3.6m dinghy comfortably seats 2 adults plus 2 children for lake outings and beach days. The soft inflatable tubes are safer for children than hard hulls. Multi-chamber safety provides peace of mind. An air deck floor adds comfort for swimmers climbing back aboard.
