What Is Marine-Grade PVC Fabric?
Marine-grade PVC fabric is a composite textile made by coating or laminating a woven reinforcement scrim with PVC (polyvinyl chloride) polymer. The fabric must meet demanding requirements: high tensile and tear strength, UV stability, flex crack resistance, airtightness, and resistance to saltwater, fuels, and abrasion. The manufacturing process — from raw polymer compounding to final surface finishing — determines whether the finished fabric meets marine industry standards or is suitable only for lower-performance applications.
Fabric Architecture: The Three-Layer Construction
Top PVC Coating (Topcoat)
A formulated PVC layer (0.15-0.40 mm) that provides UV resistance, color stability, and surface finish. Premium topcoats include UV absorbers (benzotriazoles), light stabilizers (HALS), and biocide additives to prevent mildew. Gloss or matte finish options affect both aesthetics and cleanability.
Reinforcement Scrim (Core)
A woven polyester or nylon fabric that provides mechanical strength. Scrim density is measured in denier and thread count (ends/cm × picks/cm). Marine-grade scrims use 1,000-2,000 denier yarns at 10×10 to 18×12 threads/cm. Higher denier = higher tear strength but heavier fabric.
Bottom PVC Coating (Backing)
The inner-facing PVC layer that contacts the inflation chamber. Must be formulated for airtight sealing and RF weldability. Thickness: 0.10-0.30 mm. Anti-block additives prevent the fabric from sticking during rolling and storage. Lower PVC content than the topcoat.

Wavefella Fabric Specifications
Wavefella uses fusion-laminated 1.0 mm PVC fabric with 2,000 denier polyester scrim woven at 14×12 threads/cm. The topcoat incorporates benzotriazole UV absorbers and matte embossed finish for reduced glare. Minimum tensile strength specification is 3,000 N/50mm with a tear strength minimum of 280 N (warp). All fabric rolls are factory-tested and certified before release to production. The bottom coating is formulated for RF weld compatibility, achieving 100+ N/50mm peel strength in seam samples.
